Wheel Throwing Foundations: The Cylinder
This six-week course focuses on building a strong foundation at the pottery wheel through one of the most important forms in throwing: the cylinder. We’ll begin with wedging and centering before moving into opening, pulling walls, and developing height and consistency. From there, we’ll spend time refining cylinders and building confidence through repetition before exploring surface decoration and finishing techniques.
The class will move at the pace of the group, allowing time to revisit foundational skills as needed. While there may be opportunities to explore other forms along the way, our primary focus will remain on the cylinder as a tool for developing control, consistency, and a solid foundation for future wheel work.
Instructor bio:
Kaitlyn Ferruggia is a ceramic artist and educator with over a decade of experience working with clay. Her ceramics practice began at Raritan Valley Community College and continued at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her BFA in Studio Arts with an emphasis in ceramics.
After graduating, Kaitlyn helped establish and manage a community ceramics studio in Chicago, where she continued to develop her own studio practice. Her experience includes both production pottery and fine art ceramics, and her work has been exhibited in galleries in Chicago and New Jersey.
Kaitlyn’s work is deeply intertwined with the interplay of place and memory, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and visual narratives of her New Jersey upbringing. Her practice oscillates between functional and sculptural forms, exploring how everyday objects, locales, and recollections can be intricately woven into clay.
As an educator, Kaitlyn values strong foundations while encouraging curiosity, experimentation, and, most importantly, enjoyment in the process.
